Home made Eco Friendly Jewelry Cleaner

Gentle Baking Soda Jewelry Cleaner
Gentle Baking Soda Jewelry Cleaner

I recently ran across this homemade recipe for eco friendly jewelry cleaner.  I was frantic to find an alternative to the chemical cleaners you find in most jewelry stores.  One of my favorite pair of earrings (sterling silver dangle pearls- see the before and after photos below) were lost in the bottomless pit that is my purse for several months.  When I found them they were tarnished, as silver often does and in need of a good cleaning.  Mind you these earrings are wire wrapped so I wasn’t looking forward to having to clean them with a polishing cloth and putting pearls of any kind in liquid chemical cleaners is a huge NO NO.

When I ran across this recipe I was super excited albeit a little leery.  Five minutes in the solution and they were as good as new with no damage whatsoever to the pearls.

Ingredients :

1 cup HOT water
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon dish detergent
1 piece aluminum foil

Directions:

1. Heat 1 cup water in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that covers the bottom of a small glass bowl ( I lused my pyrex measuring cup)
3. Pout the hot water in the bowl and place salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into the bowl. Place the jewelry on top of the foil and let it set for 5-10 minutes.
5. Rinse your jewelry in cool water and dry  with a soft cloth.

The solution is only good for one use, but it’s so simple you can easily make a new batch each time you need your jewels to sparkle.
